Physical-Technical Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was established in 1983 on the basis of the Izhevsk Department of the Institute of Metal Physics of the Ural Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences (was organized in 1977). At present 80 researchers (16 doctors and 55 candidates of sciences) work at the institute.

The basic directions of research:

  • physics and chemistry of surface; electron and local atomic structure of surface layers and nanostructures;
  • nature and properties of nonequilibrium metastable states occuring in metals and alloys under heating, mechanical and radiation effects;
  • static and dynamic magnetic and magnetoelastic phenomena; electromagnetic acoustics;
  • development of algorithms, software and hardware for the automation of scientific and technical measurements.
